Austin is known as “The voice of the La Cueva Bears.” At the Age of 2 Austin was diagnosed with a spinal cord tumor and underwent more than 15 surgeries in his life. Upon entering La Cueva, he immediately took on the role of PA announcer for football, volleyball, basketball, and baseball. He was also the social media director for the football program and a field announcer for 101.7 “The Team” sports radio network. He was actively involved and volunteered in numerous community causes despite needing the use of a wheelchair. He received the Section 6 National Federation of High School “Spirit of Sport” award, the 1st New Mexico student to do so. Austin was a reporter, interviewer, and announcer at numerous New Mexico Activity Association tournament events and received numerous national awards. During Super Bowl 50 and 51, Austin was given the opportunity to attend Media Day that included an interview with Peyton Manning on National Television. He was featured on CBS NFL Today show after interviewing the Denver Broncos head coach and announced the 5th pick for the Denver Broncos at the NFL Draft. Austin was a spokesman for and also received the Richard C. Shadyac Sr. Service Award from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Austin’s long battle with cancer ended December 17, 2019.
